Patricia S. Goode, MD Birmingham VA Medical Center GRECC (11G)
700 19th Street South Birmingham, AL 35233
Dear Patty,
Congratulations upon your retirement from the Department of Veterans Affairs! It has been a privilege to have had you as a colleague and a friend since I first met you in 1988, when you were a resident in internal medicine and I was a junior faculty member in the Division of General and Preventive Medicine.
You were an outstanding resident in internal medicine with an interest in pursuing a Geriatric Medicine fellowship. Therefore, J. Claude Bennett, MD, the UAB Chair of Medicine at the time mandated that we develop a Geriatric Medicine fellowship so you could do your training in Birmingham. As the first Geriatric Medicine fellow at UAB, you exemplified outstanding clinical, educational, and research skills, obtaining fellowship funding from the National Institute on Aging to support your research training.
After completing your fellowship in 1991, I was very thankful to be able to recruit you as one of the core faculty of the newly constituted Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care. In 1992, you accepted the Medical Directorship of the UAB Continence Program and helped create this multidisciplinary clinical, educational, and research program. You also directed the Division's new Clinical Research Group, which involved solicitation of industry funding, designing protocols, and implementation of clinical trials.
In 1996, you were also instrumental in developing the UAB Genitourinary Disorders Center, funded by a Health Services Foundation General Endowment Fund grant which linked the research, clinical, and educational programs of Geriatric Medicine, Gynecology, Urology, and Nursing. You went on to help develop a similar program, the UAB Genitorectal Disorders Center, a collaborative effort of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Geriatric Medicine, and General Surgery, funded by another Health Services foundation General Endowment Fund grant in 2001.
Starting in 1998, you also provided outstanding leadership on the Steering Committee and as the Clinical Training Coordinator for the Hartford Foundation-funded Southeast Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine (SCEGM). The SCEGM provided an infrastructure and important collaborations that led to a successful proposal to establish a Geriatric Research,
Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) involving both the Birmingham and Atlanta VA Medical Centers in November 2000.
You were the founding Associate Director for Clinical Programs of the new GRECC, where you established a VA-based Continence Program that serves not only as a wonderful clinical service site, but also supports educational activities for internal medicine residents and other health profession trainees and serves as a site for research. As Associate Director for Clinical Programs, you provided leadership and oversight for all GRECC-affiliated clinical demonstration programs including those in mobility and palliative care. With my retirement from UAB and transfer to VA Central Office in 2014, I was very gratified to see you assume the directorship of the GRECC.
Despite your many leadership responsibilities, you have also been a distinguished clinical educator, prompting your appointment to the McWhorter Chair of Medicine in 2005. You have developed an international reputation for your outstanding research contributions since the beginning of your career. You have demonstrated outstanding ability to obtain grant funding for your research program from VA, NIH, foundations and industry throughout your career, and your publication record is impressive.
I am very proud of you and all your accomplishments. Since I cannot be at your retirement ceremony, I wanted to let you know that I am thinking about you and wishing you the best as you embark on the next phase of your life. I pray that you find fulfillment and joy as you pursue all the opportunities associated with retirement.
Sincerely,
Richard M. Allman, MD

Jill E. Bothe RIP 2005
 In Memory of Jill

8/11/52 - 3/3/05

After graduation Jill married her sweetheart Donald and moved to Maine to start a family. They had a son together, bought a home and lived happily together for about fifteen years. After this time she grew restless and was tired of the long, cold winters Maine had to offer. She took an apprenticeship to learn the art of tattooing, got a divorce, packed her bags, her son, and moved to a collage town in Indiana and set up shop there. It took a couple years but once word of mouth got around her business flourished. The local hospital was sending her reconstructive surgery patients,  and was a pioneer in tattooing permanent make-up for women. She had countless local articles written about her and her business. A local radio station broadcasted live from her studio. Looking back this was the happiest time in her life.

She eventually remarried, and to say the least it was a rocky relationship. Because of this it took its toll on her and her business. And over time it left her sad, depressed, and broken hearted. This is about the time she started having medical problems. She had taken a bad fall in the shower in her early 20’s and hurt her back. Bending over all day, every day, doing tattoos was getting harder and harder for her to do. Jill’s mother June passed away and that was hard for her to cope with as they were always so close. She moved a couple times and cut back on her work,  because of this, her once thriving business was now a mere shell of what it once was. She was ready for a life change again.

My mother and I moved back to Maine together to start over fresh again. She was separated from her husband but never recovered from that relationship. She got to see old friends and family and she enjoyed that. She still didn’t enjoy the winters though. Money got tight and for a few other reasons we moved back to Indiana after only two years. Her health was getting progressively worse over time. She was depressed and everyone she was in contact with tried to get her to seek help or even just get out and do things. She did get out shopping and would frequent the local library at least once a week. Jill was an avid reader her whole life and loved to read a good book while drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes.  She also had a passion for cooking and baking. She had become a life long vegetarian in the late 70’s and was always trying new ways of eating her vegetables, pastas, and breads.

Jill’s health took a turn for the worse in the winter of 2005 and she passed away in March from a combination of  pneumonia and other health issues. Her brother Larry and I were at her side. She was the greatest mother anyone could ever ask for, and was my best friend. She was able to be a part in many people’s lives in her time here, and her art of tattoos are on thousands of people from all walks of life all over the world. We all miss her very much and take comfort in knowing she is in a better place now.

Bob Cornelison

In memorian

For those who knew him in high school Bob Cornelison was an unlikely academic.  His grades were lackluster, he was always getting busted for smoking in the men's room and God knows when the two of us were stocking shelves at Genuardi's in Maple Glen and the topic of What's next in life? came up I never heard him say, Um, I'm thinking theology, man.  Maybe the relationship between Reinhold Niebuhr and Jurgen Moltmann.  Yet he ended up a tenured professor of theology at Fordham UniversityI suspect theology crept up on him, surprising him as much as it did his friends, while he was teaching high school religion (as a Lutheran) at Gwynedd Mercy Academy, the Catholic girl's prep school.

In the ten years before his death in 2001 we used to see each other every five or six months, usually while I was down from New England visiting my parents in Ambler.  After he joined the theology department at Fordham I'd arrange to spend an overnight with him in the Bronx until he made his last move, to an apartment in Pelham.

Our visits in the Bronx had a common pattern. He’d take me to a nearby open air market filled with Italian and Armenian vendors selling all manner of food.  Then he’d lead me to his latest extreme ingredient discovery—fresh eels the size of your arm, say, or monkfish livers, and he’d ask if I knew how to cook them.  My wife is a chef, I'd worked in restaurants for ten years and I was doing a lot of food writing, but he wasn't really looking for my advice.  The business with exotic ingredients was just his way of maintaining a little culinary street cred.  Hey, just because you're in the restaurant world don't think we don't eat weird things here in the Bronx too.

After deciding we didn't really have time to hang an eel from his door frame and peel the skin off with a pair of pliers, we’d settle for fresh sardines or mussels, and essentials--garlic, onions, wild mushrooms, pasta, bread and red wine.  Then we’d go back to his apartment, cook an unfussy dinner and talk and drink.  That's what both of us most enjoyed--cooking and eating and drinking together.  All the while catching up our lives--my wife and kids, what I was working on, his life as a professor, his hatred of academic politics, the pressure to write and publish when he would rather have devoted himself to teaching.  On one visit he told me he’d been to France the month before where he purchased a set of Dehillerin copper cookware.  Dehillerin is uber-serious cookware, not for the faint of bicep or wallet. Given its cost it's practically a cult item. The heavy-duty pots and pans seemed wildly outsized for Bob's apartment; two of the sauté pans completely covered his tiny four-burner stovetop.  Another time he asked me about the economics of starting a catering business.  Who knew theologians harbored cooking fantasies?

In the summer of 2001 he got sick.  Quickly.  After bicycling through Germany with his German fiancé, something went dreadfully wrong.  Within a couple of weeks he could barely muster the breath to climb the stairs to her third-floor Berlin apartment.  Alarmed, he returned to the US for a diagnosis and treatment.  Soon he was using an oxygen tank to negotiate the steps to his own second floor apartment in Pelham.  Although he had given up smoking a year earlier, he had been a two-pack-a-day man for years, like his parents, who both died of lung cancer.  But his doctors ruled out cancer, then emphysema.  In September he entered Montefiore Hospital in New York for a lung biopsy, a last effort to discover what was wrong with him.  He never went home.  His fiancé was with him when he died.

During one of my visits to Fordham we spent an hour drinking beers in the late afternoon in an otherwise empty student pub while he enthused about his freshman class, Intro to Theology.  Unusual in a tenured professor, he liked teaching freshman, particularly students who were the first in their families to go to college.  Their limitations had been his own limitations—too much tv, not enough books, a sheltered view of the world.  I must have seemed a little skeptical, and he explained, “For most of these kids this will be the first and last time they open a book on theology.”  His job, he told me, was to get them to think about things that they didn’t ordinarily think about, to ask themselves questions that they didn’t normally ask.  Every semester he would be rewarded for his efforts by one or two kids who seemed to get it, usually balanced out by a few who-gives-a-shit-ers, with everyone else in between.  But that didn't matter.  As a teacher he saw himself as handing out the spiritual equivalent of an extra pair of dry socks.  You might not need them now, but you will need them.  Terrible things happen—children die, love grows cold, we get cancer or heart disease before our time.  “When those things happen, even the who-gives-a-shit-ers ask themselves a lot of the same questions we talk about in my class.  And I hope that’s when my class comes back to them.”

Almost ten years after his death, I still miss him, especially when a white truffle or lump of mullet roe shows up on my cutting board.  In July I was in Italy with my wife Jody, who was teaching a hands-on cooking class to our biking tour group.  Deep into the process I remember lifting a pot lid to check on a pair of giant octopuses stewing in their own juices.  An incredible aroma of seafood, white wine, extra virgin olive oil, garlic and orange rose up from the pot.  The octopuses themselves looked really strange, big bulbous heads and curly alien tentacles.  Cool, I thought, Bob would like that.

Martha J. Hampton 13 Oct 1952 - 8 Aug 1999

ATTORNEY, Martha J. Hampton, 46, a workers' compensation attorney, died of complications from pneumonia and heart failure Sunday at Chestnut Hill Hospital. She lived in West Mount Airy.  Ms. Hampton had been in the hospital for two weeks being treated for pneumonia when tests indicated early signs of lung cancer, said Patricia Woods, director of administration for Gelfand Berger, the Center City law firm that employed Ms. Hampton.

Ms. Hampton had worked at the firm for the last nine years. Besides practicing her specialty, she often lectured on workers' compensation for Philadelphia Bar Association groups, trial lawyers, and labor organizations. ''She spent most of her life committed to helping the injured workers,'' Woods said.  Ms. Hampton wrote articles on workplace safety and the rights of the injured. She also chaired the committee that drafted regulations and recent changes in Pennsylvania's workers' compensation law.

Born in Pullman, Wash., Ms. Hampton earned a bachelor's degree in Chinese studies from Temple University in 1975. She worked as a secretary while pursing a law degree from Temple, which she received in 1982. She was a 1970 graduate of Upper Dublin High School.

Her interests included gardening, art, science fiction and animals.  Surviving are her parents, Richard J. and M. Jane Hampton, and a sister, Roberta Hampton. Services and burial will be private.

Parker Magee Henson 15 Sept 1952 - 16 April 1988

Name: Maren Henson Judge  E-mail: phillygirl54@verizon.net
Comments: I am so pleased to see Parker's name in the Memorials. He died of a massive heart attack while working in his garden at the age of 35. He left behind 3 children - Jeffrey, Amanda, and James - who miss him every day. He was on the brink of getting a Master's in Education from William and Mary College when he died, and his degree was awarded posthumously.

I would enjoy hearing from his friends if they want to write. He did have a great smile and a wonderful sense of humor. It took him awhile to find happiness. He had 2 marriages before he finally found the one for him. Unfortunately, they were only married a couple of years when he died. He also kind of drifted after college (graduated from Ursinus College in 1974) not really know what he wanted to do with his life. Then he decided that he would like to be a teacher and went back to school. Quite a number of his pupils from when he student taught came to his funeral and all said he was a great teacher. Such a loss. It's kind of nice to "talk" about him. I don't get too many opportunities to do that.  I think Parker had finally found happiness with his third wife. He wasn't really a gardener but had decided to start a vegetable garden to save money. It was while digging up the ground for it that he died.  His daughter, Amanda, was 5 when he died and saw him collapse - quite traumatic as you can imagine. She most definately remembers him and misses him every day. She is 27. His older son, Jeffrey, is 32 and definately remembers him as well. His younger son, James, was only a month old when he died but I made him a picture album of Parker from the time he was a baby on upward and share memories of Parker whenever I can.

Parker - Rest in Peace.

Notes of conversation between Maren and Victoria S. It is good to have an answer about our friend. Thank you Maren!!!

John E. Legg June 8, 1924 - March 15, 2012

John E. Legg, 87, teacher and WWII prisoner of war

By Sally A. Downey

Inquirer Staff WriterJohn E. Legg, 87, of Wayne, a retired industrial-arts teacher in the Upper Dublin School District and a World War II prisoner of war, died Thursday, March 15, at home of heart failure.

On June 13, 1944, The Inquirer reported that the parents of Staff Sgt. John E. Legg had been notified that their son, who had been missing since May 24, was a prisoner of the Germans.

Sgt. Legg, a waist gunner on B-17s, graduated from Cheltenham High School and lived in Glenside before being inducted into the Army Air Forces in 1943, The Inquirer said.

On May 30, 1945, The Inquirer reported that he had been freed.

Missing from the newspaper accounts were the details of Sgt. Legg's capture and his imprisonment. That information would not come until 2000, when he wrote an account of his experiences for the archives of the Tredyffrin Easttown Historical Society.

His wartime ordeal, he said, began when his B-17 with a 10-man crew on a bombing mission to Berlin was attacked by German fighter planes. "Their 20mm cannon fire was exploding everywhere and it shook and vibrated the plane," he wrote. "The sounds and flashes of explosions and of twisting and tearing metal was horrible."

He and his crew bailed out. After his chute opened, he saw his plane crash and burn a short distance away. He smashed into a tree, unbuckled his chute with difficulty, dropped to the ground, and was confronted by a civilian pointing a rifle at him.

Eventually, Sgt. Legg, who hurt his back and head when he escaped the plane, joined other prisoners, including four surviving members of his crew, in Ratzeburg, Germany.

The men traveled by train to Stalag Luft IV, in what is now Poland, where they remained for eight months. They passed the time playing cards and sharing "hair-raising, wild experiences of the day they were downed," Mr. Legg wrote.

Once a day, they were fed "brown bread, mostly sawdust, and horrible, sometimes wormy, cabbage, rutabaga, or kohlrabi soup."

In the first week of February 1945, with the Russians closing in, the Germans evacuated Stalag Luft IV. Sgt. Legg was one of the "lucky" ones who, instead of leaving on foot, were packed into boxcars for an eight-day journey to a camp near Nuremberg.

The men had been in the camp for a short period when it, too, was evacuated. They were then made to march 91 miles in the cold and "soaking rain" to Stalag VII-A in Moosburg.

"Here was a camp built to house about 14,000 prisoners," he wrote, "now bulging with POWs of all nationalities and rank, numbering more than 130,000 in conditions similar to another nightmare."

On April 29, 1945, the camp was liberated, and the prisoners had some "real baked white bread. I remember it tasted so good, I thought it was better than angel food cake."

Two days later, Gen. George S. Patton visited the men. "All I can remember is that he did have those two pearl-handled pistols, and he did not look tired and dirty like his troops."

Sgt. Legg was awarded an Air Medal with two Bronze Clusters and a Purple Heart.

After his discharge, he earned a bachelor's degree from what is now Millersville University in 1952. He then earned a master's degree in education in 1953 from Texas A&M University, where he was a sheet-metal instructor.

He taught industrial arts at William Penn High School in New Castle, Del., before joining the faculty of Upper Dublin High School in 1954.

At Upper Dublin he helped organize a theater arts club and made scenery for school productions. Later he taught industrial arts at Sandy Run Junior High School.

While teaching, he designed do-it-yourself kits for American Home Craft Supply Co. of Glenside. His specialties were the repair and restoration of antique furniture, but, he told a local paper, he worked in leather and ceramics as well.

He retired in the mid-1980s.

Mr. Legg crafted kitchen cabinets and built a backyard playhouse for his children at his home in Wayne and made improvements to his summer home in Ocean City, N.J. He also found time to help friends and neighbors with projects, his daughter Jo Anne Johns said.

He was a Phillies fan and enjoyed birding and traveling across the country with his wife, Frances Legg.

The couple met at Tioga Presbyterian Church and married in 1950.

Mr. Legg was a member of the Brandywine Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by a daughter Janice, and two granddaughters.

Services were private. Mr. Legg was buried in Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
