Martin Benson Smith Jr. (“Marty” or “Big Marty”) 69, of Willow Grove, PA passed away on the evening of October 22, 2020 at Holy Redeemer Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Marty was born on October 7, 1951 in Hazelton, PA to Martin Benson Smith, Sr. and Lorraine Ebberts (both deceased). Big Marty grew up in Ambler, PA with his three siblings, George Smith (deceased), Robert “Bob” Smith, and Margaret “Peg” McIlvaine.
He was married for 20 years to Maria Elaina Yanni, with whom he has two sons, Martin Benson Smith III (married to Adrienne Larmett) and Philip Michael Smith, and five grandchildren, Landon Matthew Smith, Cecilia Isabelle Smith, Juliana Beatrice Smith, Dean Franco Smith, and Genevieve Grace Smith.
He re-married to Cynthia Turner Smith and they were married for over 15 years at the time of his passing. They had a dog "Dorsey", who adored him. Cindy and Marty spent many summer days and nights camping.
He is a proud godfather to his nephews Roger Frisario and Brian McIlvaine and also uncle to Jessica, George, Dena, Angela, Bernadette, Jennifer, Kenny, Michael, Stephen, and Mary Lynne.
Big Marty was a loving father, grandfather, and husband. He graduated from Upper Dublin High School in 1970. His passion for cars from a young age led him to a successful career as an auto mechanic; he could look at a car and diagnose any problem with amazing accuracy. He was also a lifelong outdoorsman who loved fishing, camping, and working with his hands; he could build or fix anything. Marty shared his love of fishing and enjoying simple pleasures with his family and friends. He anointed himself an “honorary Italian” and was always up for his favorite meal of “spaghetti with 4 meatballs.”
