Chaplain (Colonel) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr.
Chaplain Beale was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve in 1987 at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. He completed the Chaplain Officer Basic Course in 1991 and the Chaplain Officer Advanced Course in l994 at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, United States Army Chaplain Center and School. In 2002, he completed the United States Army Command and General Staff Officer College. He attended the Chaplain Division Course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 2004; and the Senior Unit Ministry Team Orientation (SUMTO) Course in 2007 at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. He is a graduate of the Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, where he received the degree of Master of Strategic Studies in 2010 .
Colonel Beale is the Command Chaplain, US Army Reserve Command headquartered at Fort McPherson, GA. Previously, he was the Chief of the Chaplain Recruiting Branch, US Army Recruiting Command headquartered at Fort Knox, Kentucky; and the Assistant Staff Chaplain for Administration and Operations for the 88th Regional Readiness Command headquartered at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Prior to these active duty assignments he served as a Reserve Component Chaplain with the Office of the Staff Chaplain, 88th Regional Support Command and with the 457th Transportation Battalion. His only previous active duty time was when he volunteered in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm, where he was cross-leveled as Chaplain to the 3rd Brigade of the 84th Division stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1991.
Chaplain Beale’s awards and decorations include the Army Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Military Volunteer Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device and Bronze Hourglass, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon. Chaplain Beale has been awarded the United States Army Recruiter Gold Badge with 3 Sapphire Stars and the coveted Recruiter Ring.

January 1971-January 1974 Helicopter Squadron HS85, anti-submarine warfare (I can still hear that sonar ping in my sleep although it wasn't really a ping sound), air-sea rescue, (we had ten aircraft and in my three years there we only picked up one downed pilot, but, it was fun to play pretend with the rescue hoist), carrier escort, their eye in the sky, we assisted The Enterprise,The Coral Sea, The Hancock, and The Ranger).
January 1974, got an "early out for college", active duty was over, Yippee, headed home to Pennsylvania.
Reserve time, one weekend a month, NAS Willow Grove:
February 1974-December 1974, VP66, they too were sub hunters.
January 1975-June 1975, VP64, Wake me up if anything exciting happens....it was getting kind of old.
June 1975-June 1976, One year in the Ready Reserves doing absolutely nothing.
Squadron Update: In June 1995 my old squadron, HS85 (now designated HC85) was used in the movie Apollo 13 astronaut recovery scenes. They used my old squadron because they were the only ones still flying the antiquated SH3 aircraft.
HC85 was also used in an episode of JAG.....wow, had I stayed in I might have become a movie star.
Today, on my office wall hangs the teletype that came into my squadron on 09 JAN 73 addressed to all members of the Pacific Fleet, It read:
The President today announced that an internationally supervised cease fire in Vietnam will take effect this Saturday, North Vietnam will release all prisoners of war in the next 60 days. Pretty neat piece of history announcing the end of the war.
Duane Quenzel served in the USAF from 1970 to 1974 & was stationed @ Dover AFB in Delaware. He worked on the C-5A Galaxy transport aircraft. He was also in the USAF Reserves from 1974 to 1976.
